A new report explaining the situation of the islands in the South China Sea said that even if China tries to capture the islands and regions present above the sea, which are reportedly rich in minerals.

The controversy surrounding the mighty South China Sea started a few years ago as Beijing has been attempting to control all the islands and reefs and turning them into military bases and airstrips but keeps ignorant towards the situation that might arise due to these activities. If it continues to do this, these areas will be vulnerable to attacks.

What China keeps neglecting is though it Keeps calling this area ist territory, it ignores the fact that these areas are far from the actual mainland. The disputed waters are spread across 3.3 million square kilometers and this makes it a very convenient dismissal for Beijing.

The report published by the Beijing based Naval and Merchant Ships said, “Islands and reefs in the South China Sea have unique advantages in safeguarding national sovereignty and maintaining a military presence in the open sea, but they have natural weaknesses with regard to their own military defense.”

These attempts have been going on since 2014 in which China has claimed almost all of the South China Sea. The areas captured by China are heavily fortified by thousands of missiles, runaways and expensive weapon systems.

But China is not alone in claiming the territory. Nearly six other countries are claiming the territory marked by the South China Sea which include the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Taiwan, who have rejected the claims of China saying that China is responsible for creating dispute in the area.

These claims are also rejected by the United States. The Trump administration regards these claims as illegal. The US has also countered the operations done by Beijing by sending warships to the region and calls it freedom navigation.

The nations that stand against China combine are far more strong than China. For example the United States formed a group of Quad countries combining Japan, India, Australia and India, all of which have issues with China’s illegal capturing.

Not more than two weeks ago, the Quad nations held their second maritime exercise in a bid to keep a check on China’s growing military presence in the Asia Pacific region. These nations combined with all those who claim their territory in the disputed South China Sea will make it impossible for the largest economic power in the world to carry out peaceful operations in the region.
