US suspects Russian hackers for snooping into emails
The United States Treasury and Commerce Departments internal email has been suspected to have meddled with by the Russian hackers confirms a report. These hackering are responsible for monitoring internal emails of the department, the report suggests.
On Saturday, the information was released and it was called as a serious attack on the security of the US. It became so serious that a National Security Council meeting at the White House. The following information was confirmed with the sources close to the people involved in the matter.
The US officials have not yet comentated anything publicly and are refraining from disclosing too much details. The only department in view of the cyber attack is the commerce department, who confirmed that there was breach at one of his agencies.
The matter is now taken to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the The Federal Bureau, who will now investigate the matter. A spokesperson from the National Security Council John Ullyot said, “we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation.”
The Trump administration has also not revealed who is behind the attack until everything is confirmed. However, three people who are aware of the matter and are a part of the investigation team said that Russia is believed to be responsible.
Revealing a little further information on the possible attackers, the two the people said that the whole incident is a part of a larger campaign which also involves another such attack disclosed hack on FireEye, a major cybersecurity company with government and commercial contacts.
For a long time, the Russian government officials did not comment on the matter but some of the intelligence agencies said that they have found some tampering in the IT company called Solar Winds, responsible for catering to the government customers.
This attack is being called a ‘supply chain attack’. One Texas-based company, teh Austin, said that it is monitoring the software released between March and June of this year and described it as ‘highly sophisticated.”
This is a much bigger story than one single agency,” said one of the people familiar with the matter. “This is a huge cyber espionage campaign targeting the US government and its interests,”Solar Wind said in a statement.
